Futures Technology Centre
Hobart, Tasmania
art+architecture
Consultant artist and
member of the design team.
1993/94
Every aspect of the building was considered as part
of a collaboration between art and architecture which began at the
concept stage. The building’s function as an education centre
for young people was an important consideration and the modular
nature of construction allows for future flexibility of form. The
design team worked closely with a local precast concrete manufacturer
and developed a ‘palette’ using combinations of oxide,
aggregates and finishes. The building won the Precast Concrete Association
of Australia award.
The signage for the building was designed to resemble
computer icons. Each floor was colour coded and fourteen different
symbols were created
as a means of navigating within the building.
