The Laws of Nature.
We assume that there are laws underpinning nature, that
somehow there is a logic to everything. In the West we have the
idea that the underlying structure of the world is mathematical
and that science will lead to understanding and perhaps control.
We may think of a seed (or DNA) as having all the information required
to grow to maturity but it must also have something more fundamental
- life itself.
Recent developments in genetic engineering mean we now
have a different kind of interaction with ourselves and the world.
We are capable of making alterations at a more fundamental level.
However, beyond the mechanical - the logic of cause and effect -
there is a sense of threat, a disquiet, a feeling that nature is
indifferent to us - more powerful than reason.
